Nissan Skyline GT-R Between 1969 and 1974, and again between 1989 and 2002, Nissan produced a high performance version of its Skyline range called the Nissan Skyline GT-R. This car proved to be iconic for Nissan[6][7] and achieved much fame and success on road and track. The Nissan GT-R, although no longer carrying the "Skyline" badge, has heritage in the Nissan Skyline GT-R. Like the Skyline GT-Rs R32 through R34, the Nissan GT-R is all-wheel drive with a twin-turbo 6 cylinder engine; however, the evolutionary, incremental changes between Skyline models R32 through R34 have been done away with. The four-wheel-steering HICAS system has been removed, and the former straight-6 RB26DETT engine has been replaced with a new V6 VR38DETT.[8] Because of the GT-R's heritage, the chassis code for the all-new version has been called CBA-R35,[9] or 'R35' for short, carrying on the naming trend from previous Skyline GT-R generations. The GT-R has also retained its Skyline predecessor's nickname Godzilla.[10][11] [edit] Concepts GT-R Prototype at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show Two concept vehicles were displayed at motor shows prior to the unveiling of the production model. The first concept was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2001 to preview what a 21st century GT-R would look like.[12] At the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan unveiled a redesigned concept, the GT-R Proto, stating that the production GT-R would be 80-90% based on this concept.[13] [edit] Production [edit] Production model The production version of the GT-R debuted at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, launching in the Japanese market on December 6, 2007. The U.S. official launch was 7 months later on July 07, 2008. Universal Nissan in Los Angeles provided a customer with the delivery of a new GT-R, fresh from the production line at 12:01 a.m., on July 7, 2008. The Canadian launch was also in July 2008. Europe became the third consumer market, where it launched in March 2009. The large disparity in initial marketing between these regional releases is due to Nissan having to build GT-R performance centers where the car is serviced. Also the engine and rear-mounted dual-clutch gearbox are built by hand, thus limiting production to around 1000 cars a month.[14] [edit] Specifications The Nissan GT-R is powered by the VR38DETT engine, a 3,799 cc (3.8 L; 231.8 cu in) DOHC V6. Two parallel Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) turbochargers provide forced induction.[15] Production vehicles produce a manufacturer-claimed engine output of 474 bhp (353 kW) at 6400 rpm and 434 lb·ft (588 N·m) at 3200-5200 rpm.[16] According to independent dynamometer tests, the GT-R produces 416 hp (310 kW) to 475 hp (354 kW) and 414 lb·ft (561 N·m) to 457 lb·ft (620 N·m) at the wheels.[17][18] The engine also meets California Air Resources Board Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards.[19] A curb weight of 1,730 kg (3,800 lb) or 1,736 kg (3,830 lb) with side curtain airbags is achieved using a jig welded steel chassis with aluminum used for the hood, trunk, and doors.[20] A rear mounted six-speed BorgWarner dual clutch semi-automatic transmission is used in conjunction with the ATTESA E-TS system to provide power to all four wheels and along with Nissan's Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC-R) aids in stability. Three shift modes can also be selected for various conditions. The GT-R has a drag coefficient of 0.27.[21] - Displacement: V6 3,799 cc (3.8 L; 231.8 cu in)

[edit] Performance Cutaway model showing rear mounted transmission Nissan claims the GT-R can reach a top speed of 193 mph (311 km/h),[23] Motor Trend recorded a top speed of 195.0 mph (313.8 km/h).[24] It has been tested to achieve 0-60 mph (97 km/h) times as low as 3.2 seconds with "launch control"[25] and 3.8 seconds without[26] (improved to 3.5 seconds in models produced since March 2009[27]). Nissan's chief vehicle engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno has indicated that he has never used the term "launch control", which refers to the act of turning off vehicle dynamic control (VDC) and launching the car at around 4500 rpm.[28] However, Nissan's director of product planning John Wiener clearly stated in an interview with Jay Leno that "we [Nissan] actually offer a 'launch mode'". [29] The GT-R user's manual states that turning off the VDC is only meant for escaping low-traction situations such as mud or snow, and that damage to the transmission is not covered under warranty if the VDC is used in other ways.[30][28] It reportedly costs $20,000 USD to replace a damaged transmission outside of warranty.[31] Nissan has re-programmed the 2010 model year GT-R to reduce the engine speed at launch to around 3,000 to 3,500 rpm with VDC enabled, which is meant to improve acceleration times. The new programming was also installed on old 2009 vehicles still in Nissan's inventory, and is available for existing 2009 vehicles.[32] Car and Driver achieved a standing quarter-mile time of 11.5 s at 202 km/h (126 mph).[33] Evo magazine achieved a 0-100-0 mph time of 13.9 seconds.[34] Autocar achieved a 0-100 mph (160 km/h) time of 8.5 seconds.[35] With a manufacturer claimed lap time of 7:26.7 on the base model's Dunlop tires[36] and previously 7:29 min on standard Japanese market tires, the GT-R is currently one of the fastest production cars to lap the Nürburgring circuit,[37][38] although Porsche accused Nissan of falsifying those claims in September 2008.[39][40] Porsche claims to have conducted their own test of the GT-R using no modifications and stock tires and achieved a best time of 7:54. Nissan officially disputed Porsche's claim in October 2008.[41][42] The German magazine sport auto achieved a time of 7:50 on the Nürburgring with a car supplied to them by Nissan during an initial short test in 2007,[43] while testing by Drivers Republic of a GT-R and GT2 in stock form resulted in times of 7:55 for the GT-R and 7:49 for the GT2 respectively.[44] Both tests were conducted in partially damp conditions and by automotive journalists rather than professional track drivers. In a full test in 2009 sport auto achieved a time of 7:38 minutes on the Nürburgring with a standard GT-R when being driven by Horst von Saurma.[43] Autocar released a video comparison of the GT-R with the Porsche 911 GT3 and BMW M3. Driven by test driver Chris Harris the GT-R was the fastest of the three.[45][46][47] Evo tested the GT-R alongside the 911 GT3 at the Bedford Autodrome circuit, the GT-R ran a 1:21.7 lap time compared to GT3's 1:22.6 time.[48] Car and Driver compared the GT-R on Reno-Fernley Raceway with the Porsche 911 Turbo and BMW M3, the GT-R's lap time of 1:26.7 made it the fastest on the track.[49] Road & Track was able to achieve quick lap times with the car on Buttonwillow Raceway, clocking in at 1:56.9 just over 5 seconds faster than the Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06 and Porsche 911 Turbo.[50][51] On Willow Springs International Motorsports Park, Edmunds was able to achieve lap times of 1:25.09 compared to the Corvette ZR1's time of 1:23.87.[52] In an earlier Edmunds 6-way test which included the Audi R8 on both the Streets of Willow and an improvised mountain road, the GT-R was quickest.[53] On the Las Vegas Motor Speedway infield road course, Motor Trend were able to achieve lap times with the GT-R that were almost as fast as the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and Porsche 911 GT2 and 3 seconds slower than a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.[54] The GT-R currently holds a lap time of 1:19.7 around the Top Gear Test Track, equalling that of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia.[55] On Top Gear Australia's test track the GT-R posted a lap time of 1:07.06, putting it in second place 0.14 seconds behind the Porsche 997 GT2. Top Gear laps are conducted from a standing start. [edit] Design The customizable multifunction display integrated into the dash of the GT-R Nissan chief creative officer, Shirō Nakamura, has likened the new GT-R to the eponymous giant robots of the Gundam series. Nakamura states: "The GT-R is unique because it is not simply a copy of a European-designed supercar, it had to really reflect Japanese culture." Nakamura noted that the GT-R's square lines and vents were influenced by Gundam robots. Nissan's American designers sculpted the rear three quarters of the vehicle, while their European designers sculpted the roofline.[56] Polyphony Digital, creators of the Gran Turismo series of racing video games, were themselves involved in the development of the GT-R, having been contracted to design the GT-R's multifunction display.[57] Nissan introduced the GT-R SpecV on January 7, 2009 at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon.[58] Exterior changes from the base GT-R consist of a carbon fiber rear spoiler, grille, and brake ducts, along with an exclusive Ultimate Black Opal paint job. Interior changes include a set of carbon fiber Recaro front seats with the rear seats being completely removed. Carbon fiber covers the center storage box, instrument panel, and replaces the majority of the interior trim. The GT-R SpecV is powered by the standard twin-turbo 3,799 cc (3.8 L; 231.8 cu in) V6 with no increase in (peak) horsepower. But a new high gear boost controller that allows a temporary increase in boost pressure to the IHI twin turbochargers, now larger than those on the standard GT-R, should deliver more torque in mid to high-range revs. Other mechanical changes include a titanium exhaust, reworked suspension, carbon ceramic brakes, and 20-inch (510 mm) NISMO wheels. Overall weight is decreased by 132 lb (60 kg) over the standard GT-R.[59] Japan sales begin on February 2, 2009 at seven pre-selected dealers who are staffed by mechanics with special GT-R SpecV training and are knowledgeable of racing circuit driving. Pricing is set at ¥15,750,000 (over US$160,000). Nissan has not announced any plans to sell the SpecV outside of Japan.

Additional technical enhancements include an exclusive suspension system on the Highway Star model for more stable handling and improved ride comfort. A new Active Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) is also standard on the Highway Star model. Environmental and Fuel Efficiency The new Serenas powerplant was designed with environmental efficiency in mind. To that end, it has been confirmed under the recently adopted Japan’s JC08 mode(*3) that all two-wheel drive Serena models emit 75% fewer nitrogen oxides (NOx) and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) than the levels required under Japan’s 2005 exhaust emission regulations. Four-wheel drive models also attain the same reduced emission levels under the 10-15+11 test mode. Fuel economy for the two-wheel drive models has been clarified to closely match actual fuel consumption in real-world driving conditions, through tests conducted JC08 test mode, as well as on conventional 10-15 test mode data. To assist Serena drivers in matching those numbers, all models feature a new fuel consumption display function added to the liquid crystal display odometer and twin trip meter.vvv

Toyota iQ early adapters Posted on 04/02/2009 under: Hatchbacks, Toyota Early indications are that the iconic Toyota iQ is already becoming more to its owners than purely transportation. A good example of this is desert adventurer and author Tom Sheppard who, when he is not travelling across the Sahara or writing his new book “Quiet for a Tuesday,” is designing a unique colour scheme for his own iQ. Mocked-up on his computer and precisely executed by GSK Bodyworks, round the corner from his local Toyota Centre in Luton, it has generated nods and smiles from passers-by. Ex-RAF test-pilot Sheppard says the iQ’s originality, engineering and detail design warms the cockles of his perfectionist, nit-picking heart. ‘Clean, green and mean. A minimal planet/wallet-impact coefficient,’ he says with a straight face. ‘Or to put it another way, 99g/km CO2, no road tax and 67.57mpg on my last tank-full isn’t bad for openers! I love it!’ Toyota is working on a range of accessories that will soon enable owners to customise their own iQ’s.
Frankfurt: World premiere of the Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept The Toyota Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept will take centre stage for Toyota at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor show. The concept represents a milestone in Toyota’s strategy: introducing Toyota’s full hybrid technology to a mainstream model, and the first step in the deployment of Hybrid Synergy Drive across the company’s model range. The new Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept will also make its world premiere in Frankfurt. Prius Plug-in Hybrid expands the capabilities of Toyota’s full hybrid technology, enabling pure electric operation for short-range day-to-day transportation. In early 2010, an extensive field trial in Europe will see over 150 units being leased to selected fleet customers. Frankfurt will also stage the European Premiere of the iconic, all-new Toyota Land Cruiser, which will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2009. Two customised iQ show cars, iQ for Sports and iQ Collection, will also be on display.
New Audi R8 V10 Spyder makes UK debut at West London Audi Posted on 10/12/2009 under: News, Sports/GTs, Audi The flagships of the Audi model range and the Audi Centre retail network will combine to stunning effect today (Monday October 12) as the new open-top R8 Spyder takes pride of place within the new 190,000 square-foot West London Audi for the Centre’s grand inauguration ceremony. Making its debut in front of over 300 guests at the new West London landmark, the new R8 Spyder with fully automatic lightweight fabric hood brings added wind-in-hair intensity to the already extreme driving experience delivered by the lightweight aluminium, mid-engine and quattro-equipped super car. Based on the 525PS, 5.2-litre FSI model, but featuring a bespoke body incorporating additional weight-saving carbon fibre composite panels, the new open-air R8 will be available to order in the UK from November in six-speed manual and six-speed R tronic automated manual forms priced at £109,580 OTR and £114,670 OTR respectively. UK deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2010. The conversion process in the striking new soft-top is typically quick and easy, the electrohydraulically controlled hood opening and closing at the touch of a button in 19 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph. When lowering it folds like a Z beneath the automatically activated cover of its storage compartment above the ten cylinder engine. Unique all-LED headlights Standard equipment for the R8 Spyder includes all-LED headlights – a world first for Audi in the R8 V10 – and inside an extended leather package featuring Fine Nappa leather, the Audi Music Interface iPod connection system (or a CD changer as required) linked to a Bang & Olufsen sound system, heated seats, DVD satellite navigation and unique new seatbelt-mounted microphones which make it possible to talk on the phone even with the top down on the motorway. Like its Coupe relative the Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro, which was developed in cooperation with quattro GmbH, delivers absolutely uncompromising performance. The naturally aspirated V10 engine, much of which is hand-built, produces 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm and peak output of 525PS at 8,000 rpm as it revs freely to its 8,700 rpm limit. Performance reflects this awesome potential: 0 – 62mph in 4.1 seconds; 0 – 124mph in 12.7 seconds; a top speed of 194mph for the six-speed manual version – all delivered with a heady ten-cylinder soundtrack that is of course even easier to savour in this open-top model. Handling is optimized by quattro permanent all-wheel drive that distributes power to all four wheels with a heavy rear bias, and by Audi magnetic ride, which uses magnetic fields in the shock absorbers to adjust their response to road conditions within milliseconds and adapt to the driver’s style. The limelight is likely to be stolen from the beautiful new open-top to a certain extent by the building that will house it for its UK debut. West London Audi – the world’s largest Audi Centre – is the result of an investment of six years and £45 million by Audi UK, and will house up to 116 display cars on three of the seven storeys that make up its 190,000 square-foot ‘footprint’. Many of the cars on display from the now 33-strong Audi model range will be visible from the elevated section of the M4 which flanks the imposing new London landmark. The highly distinctive new Centre will be operated by the Sytner Group, and will be staffed by around 100 personnel. Within 12 months of the doors officially opening to the public on Monday October 19, approximately 30,000 customers are expected to have passed through its doors.

Wednesday October 21, 2009 The new-for-2010 Mazda3 is my favorite compact car, so I figured the hot-rod version, with its 263 hp turbo engine, would be a shoo-in for my affection. As it happens, the 2010 Mazdaspeed3 wasn't quite what I was expecting. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Find out in my 2010 Mazdaspeed3 test drive and review. -- Aaron Gold Photo © Mazda Tuesday October 20, 2009 I grew up in the Rust Belt. I was one heck of a good snow driver, I did it all on all-season tires, and I don't think you would have been able to convince me that snow tires would have been a good investment. But that's mainly because I'd never driven on snow tires. Well, now I have, plenty of times, and the difference between all-season tires and winter tires is... well, maybe not night and day, but at least dusk and noon. That's all well and good, but with the economy in the shape it's in and everyone worried about money, is this really the time to invest a couple-few hundred bucks in a set of snow tires? Honestly, I think it is. Tires are the most oft-overlooked safety feature on our cars. Check out Snow Tire Q&A for five questions (and answers) that make the case for buying winter tires. -- Aaron Gold Photo © Aaron Gold Related: Bridgestone Winter Driving School DVD review Monday October 19, 2009 There are all sorts of reasons I wish I had a time machine, and as of today I have another one: I'd like to go 30 years into the future to see what history says about the Panamera. Was it a good idea? Did people embrace it? Was it considered a proper Porsche? I'll have to wait to get my answers, but having driven the Panamera, I can tell you that Porsche is off to a pretty darn good start. Get the details in my 2010 Porsche Panamera test drive and review. -- Aaron Gold Photo © Aaron Gold What's new for 2010: Kia and Lexus Friday October 16, 2009 I guess I was just in the mood for juxtaposition today... although the newest vehicles from Kia are actually pretty darn impressive. Especially the new Forte -- I think that one's going to be a big hit. Anyway, here's what's what: By the way, my photo gallery of new and redesigned cars is now up to 84 vehicles, with links to test drives and photo galleries where we have 'em, and I have a bunch of 2010 reviews coming up in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned! -- Aaron Gold
